A high speed police pursuit following a suspected teen theft ended in a fatal pedestrian accident after one of the police vehicles involved in the chase struck and killed a pedestrian.
According West Sacramento police spokesperson Lt. Tod Sockman, at around 8:30 in the evening last September 4, a police officer pursuing a stolen vehicle called for assistance. Unfortunately, as the second vehicle rushed to join the pursuit, it struck a man walking along Pine Street and West Capitol Avenue. The impact of the collision killed the pedestrian in an instant.
The first unit that was originally chasing the stolen vehicle abandoned the pursuit to assist at the pedestrian accident scene, leaving the owner of the car as the only one going after the driver who stole the vehicle.
Further reports claimed that the stolen vehicle eventually slammed into a parked car in the 1900 block of Maryland Avenue. Therefore, the owner of the vehicle had its chance to catch and detain the theft who was subsequently identified as a 17-year-old male. Aside from his age, no further details about the suspect were disclosed by authorities due to his age.
Meanwhile, the pedestrian who died from the incident was identified as Brandon Louis Nickolas, 31. Moreover, police later found out that the victim was a transient living in West Sacramento.
Initially, the juvenile suspect was charged with the murder of the pedestrian. However, the juvenile court eventually decided to drop the homicide case and instead charged him with vehicle theft and possession of stolen property and other related infractions.
Incidentally, succeeding reports claimed that the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is currently conducting an investigation to determine whether pursuit policies were followed accordingly.
While feeling sorry for the pedestrian, a Los Angeles auto accident attorney hopes for a fast resolution for this case to finally determine who is to be held liable for the death of the innocent pedestrian who was unfortunately killed during the car chase.
